Mostly--if that united disbanded or refused to interact with each other or tried to separate to others. ... I'm fairly certain that's how Maki caught hers, anyway. Supposedly at the time she was living with Future is Now.
It's annoying. Between the ways we decorate our quarters to our clothing and even where we rest at night--they want everything to be "just so," at least to an extent. Supposedly it's because Hell doesn't see us the way we see ourselves--and so, if we don't maintain our separated identities, we'll all start to blend together... and Hell will make us all into the damned.
It could, however, all be a very clever and elaborate tactic of manipulation.
It would be very dangerous for yourself and for others to experiment, unfortunately. Not to mention what it might trigger in my unit and Bad End.
However, we do have some leeway with clothing and decorations. It's not clear by how much, but as long as we go back to wearing our own unit's style, or mix styles as opposed to trying to totally replace them, they leave us alone.

Geez, this place does everything it can to control us, doesn't it? In the end that's an easy fix, but... still.

I guess it would be stupid to risk it when in the end, it's really just wearing some clothes and sleeping in your own dorm.
